Tooth brushing

Brushing teeth properly helps prevent cavities and gum disease which causes at least one-third of adult tooth loss. It is also important to teach children from a young age how to clean their teeth correctly as this will be a skill they can take into adulthood.

If you are unsure of the best brushing technique, please speak to your dental hygienist  – we are here to help.

Gum disease

Gum disease is one of the most common dental problems adults face and it can begin at any age, developing slowly and without causing any pain.

At your appointment, your dentist will look for any signs of gum disease and suggest treatment is necessary. Gum disease can almost always be prevented with good oral hygiene techniques and regular trips to your dentist.

Sensitive teeth

Tooth sensitivity occurs when the surface beneath the enamel, called the dentin is exposed. This allows hot, cold or sweet food to reach the nerve of your tooth and cause the pain.

The good news is there are many ways to control sensitive teeth.

  • Brush, floss, and rinse regularly.
  • Use a soft-bristled tooth brush and brush gently and carefully around the gum line so you don’t remove gum tissue.
  • Watch what you eat, avoid lots of highly acidic foods and drinks.
  • Use fluoridated dental products. Using a fluoridated mouth rinse daily can decrease sensitivity.
  • If you grind your teeth speak to your dentist about a mouth guard that you can wear at night.

If you still have discomfort, talk to your dentist who may be able to suggest other treatments.

Bad breath

There are many causes for breath odour, foods like garlic and onions are a contributing factor, along with smoking and drinking coffee.

Maintaining good oral health is essential to reducing bad breath, good oral hygiene techniques such as cleaning your teeth (and tongue) twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and regular visits to your dentist for a dental clean and check-up.

If you are concerned about breath odour please talk to your dentist. they will be able to help identify the cause and develop a treatment plan to help eliminate it.

Stain removal

Tooth colour is a very individual thing and can darken as we get older.

The colour of your teeth is also affected by staining substances such as coffee, tea, fizzy drinks and smoking. You can prevent new stains by avoiding food and drinks that stain teeth or by brushing your teeth immediately after eating.

At Brunner Court Dental & Implant Practice we also offer several treatments that can whiten your teeth.
